Perhaps best known for his role as the English butler opposite Dudley Moore in "Arthur," for which he won an Academy Award for, one of the leading British actors of the 20th century, alongside Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson, has passed away at age 96.

Recent appearances include ELIZABETH, Kenneth Branagh's HAMLET, PORTRAIT OF A LADY, and SHINE.

A shame he's "best known" for such a otherwise lousy movie. Won an Oscar for it. The finest Hamlet of his generation.

Gielgud had one of the most beautifully clear speaking voices in English ever. Silvery.

One of his better roles was Prospero in "Prospero's Books" by Peter Greenaway. If you're a Gielgud fan, check it out.
