"Short Sharp Shock" (1997) is hid first feature film, and a very good one. I saw it a couple of years ago on TV and liked it, though it didn`t make the same impact on me as "Head-On".
Fatih Akin said that he considers "Head-On" to be his first "real" movie, with the three that preceeded it being a period of apprenticeship on his way to becoming a filmmaker.
I don`t think the difference is this huge, but you should check it out for yourself.

I have seen Akin's second feature, In July, which was fair but not nearly as good as Head-On. Haven't seen either Short Sharp Rock or Solino.
