Cabeza de Vaca, an amazing film directed by Nicolas Echevarria, about the Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, who in the early 16th century landed on the shores of So. Florida, was captured and enslaved by the local Indians along with three or four of his shipmates, and eventually melded with his captors, was mentored by the shaman of the tribe and became a healer himself. The film was taken from a written account of de Vaca's eight years of captivity.

The film is striking in the unfolding of de Vaca's immersion into a new culture and the impact on his future. Please check out this website for more. The film is difficult to find. I borrowed it through interlibrary loan from a local library, and eventually bought it from an online vendor.

I'm usually not into historical films, but this one sounds very interesting.
And thanks for the link to the website which looks very interesting. If only more films would get such an amount of (academic?) attention...
If I get to see the film, this will definitely be helpful.
