Re-cycle (2006) (Hong Kong)

There is a universal truth about any film involving the Pang Brothers. It will have a cool and excitingly unconventional premise that will always find its detractors. Re-cycle will probably find its fair share of them as well. It has been billed as a meta-horror film that builds on the different realms of existence and the crossing of those barriers.

But thats not to say Re-cycle is particularly bad, but that it was a missed opportunity for the Pang Brothers to redefine the genre yet again given its weak script. They previously worked together on the critically lauded The Eye series and Bangkok Dangerous, which elevated them to fame among horror enthusiasts and showed off their immense talents to an awe-struck audience. With an eye (hehe) for horror, they garnered fans from across Asia and the West, each eagerly awaiting their next horror collaboration. As the Pang brothers are genre-centric filmmakers, you can always be assured of spine-chilling experiences. Re-cycle is no exception........

It's not a horror movie. Believe that. It's more along the lines of Neverending Story, Spirited Away and Alice in Wonderland - but all macabre and disturbing in a uniquely Pang Brothers style.

There's a twist at the end, very Shyamalan-esque. It doesn't dwell on the twist nor give you detailed explanations of how and why it is so. It's not going to please everyone who anticipated a scarefest and are disappointed with the visible shift in genres midway through the film.

The underlying messages are somewhat weak and not thought through as well as they should be. But take NOTHING away from the visual extravanganza that will unfold infront of you. All this on a relatively shoestring budget of USD5 million. When Stay Alive (www.imdb.com/title/tt0441796/) cost upwards of USD10 million, it really puts into perspective the strength of filmmakers who put their minds to something.

Just hope it's better than Oxide Pang's Ab-normal Beauty, great if a little too glossy build up only to collapse into a piece of contrived crud which had nothing to do with the central characters or story. As directors they appear to work better together than when apart, perhaps they should stick to directing joint productions.

Cheers Trev.

P.S. Welcome to the site.

Thanks

This movie is unlike any Pang Brothers movie. It's really a fantastical journey layered with some macabre aspects like zombies, ghouls and aborted fetuses.
