Foreign Films Made During World War II

Postby wpqx » Sat Apr 01, 2006 3:56 am

I'd like to get together a comprehensive list of films made outside of the US during WWII. I mean there are a few films extremely well known in this period, but basically the only films really known from that era (roughly 1940-1944) are American. I'm just looking over my list of films by year, and these years are almost completely covered with US releases, and the few European films seem to be British, which isn't much different. So anybody who knows of any off beat masterpieces or worthwhile films from the era, put 'em here. I'll start with the few I have.

Day of Wrath
Le Courbeau

That's it, wow very sad @#%$ right there. At least according to the films I have listed, that's all I've seen from the whole five year stretch. Anyways this is obviously a weak area for me, so feel free to help me out, I know there were some worthwhile Japanese films made this time, including Kurosawa's first, but we need names, and preferably films that can be tracked down.

Well, let's see. A few that come to mind are: Mizoguchi's The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums (1939, I believe -- and I'm sure you've seen it) and The 47 Ronin (1941); Naruse's The Song Lantern (1943); Ozu's The Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family (1941) and There was a father (1942); a couple from Italian neorealists ; Eisenstein's Ivan (1944)... etc.

Apart from the ones already mentioned, here's a couple more that i've seen.....

Aniki Bobo (1942) - Manoel de Oliveira
Judo Saga (1943) - Akira Kurosawa

Rossellini's "Rome, Open City" was made during the war, but not released until after. But i suppose it does count.

Thanks for those, I forgot about Ivan, I guess I don't have it on my index yet. Yes you are right arsaib, I have seen Chrysanthemums, but I wasn't counting 1939, considering you could also add Rules of the Game and others if that were the case. But as I can see from the small lists I've gotten, that there aren't an overwhelming number of films to offer.

Hmmm, actually this is the film-period I have the least knowledge of...
Besides the films you have mentioned, the worthwhile "foreign" films I have seen that were made during WWII would be:

Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne The Ladies of the Bois de Boulogne
Les Enfants du paradis Children of Paradise
as far as I know, both were made during WWII

and also:
La nuit fantastique "Fantastic Night" (Marcel L'Herbier / France / 1942) which is available on DVD (by kino?)

But how about some other classics that are considered highly?

Emberek a havason (Istvn Szts / Hungary / 1942)
Himlaspelet "The Road to Heaven" (Alf Sjberg / Sweden / 1942)
Les visiteurs du soir "The Devil's Envoys" (Marcel Carn / France / 1942)
L'ternel retour "The Eternal Return" (Jean Delannoy / France / 1943)
Le ciel est vous "The Sky Is Yours" (Jean Grmillon / France / 1943)
Les anges du pch "Angels of Sin" (Robert Bresson / France / 1943)
Lumire d't (Jean Grmillon / France / 1943)
Mechta "Dream" (Mikhail Romm / Soviet Union / 1943)
Ordet "The Word" (Gustaf Molander / Sweden / 1943)
Hets "Torment" (Alf Sjberg / Sweden / 1944)
Raduga "The Rainbow" (Mark Donskoi / Soviet Union / 1944)
Unter den Brcken "Under the Bridges" (Helmut Kutner / Germany / 1944)

Yeah, took me quite some time to gather the information. Your demand initially really caught me off the heels.
Difficult era to tackle.
