Charlie Chaplin's shorts...

...are really @#%$ great.

Chaplin was a genius, but his shorts from 1917 may have convinced me that he was the greatest director America ever produced. Not only that, but they're like nothing I've ever seen from Chaplin -- domestic violence, drug abuse, attempted rape, vaudeville humour -- unreal compared to something like City Lights.

Funny Chaplin was British.

Can't say I was a particularly huge fan of his short films, but I've only seen maybe a dozen or so. Any particular recommendations?

I've only seen about 12 of his shorts, almost all before 1916, and (only) two were great:
The Count (1916)
The Vagabond (1916)
Besides his longer work, Shoulder Arms! (1918) is phenomenal, but I don't consider it a short, but a full length film.
