About "Island on Bird Street": when I mentioned it earlier, I hadn't actually seen it, but my copy had arrived in the mail this morning. I have watched it since, and can tell you that it is a powerful bit of film-making. No doubt many will want to compare it with "Edges of the Lord", but I would have to say that the film it evoked in me most strongly was "Empire of the Sun"---both were based on autobiographical novels, though it must be said that "Empire of the Sun" seems to have had the larger budget of the two. Both films also boast a powerful music score, though "Island..."'s is more downplayed. It will be interesting to see whether Jordan Kiziuk, the young star of "Island...", will have as long and varied a film career as hasd Christian Bale.
