I figure if the critics can do it...so can the people who actually pay to see the damn things! Here's mine:

1) Lost in Translation
2) The Son
3) The Man without a Past
4) Lilya 4-Ever
5) City of God
6) Raising Victor Vargas
7) Le Circle Rouge (saw in re-release)
8) Sweet Sixteen
9) Elephant
10) TIE - Man on the Train & The Barbarian Invasions

Movies I despised: Alex & Emma, Dumb & Dumberer, The Order, Matrix Revolutions, Cat in the Hat, Gothika

I will post my list once I get around to seeing some more films -- but I must add that I do not understand this love for 'Lost in Translation'. I thought it was offensive and amateurish, though the cinematography is great. It was nothing remarkable. If I were the child of Francis Ford Coppola and the husband of Spike Jonze, I could have made a film just as good.

I saw quite a few films this year but alot of them were crap. There's some movies I'm looking forward to in teh near future which 2003 didn'w quite deliver (like the release of Afghanistan's "Osama").

1. Bend It Like Beckham
2. Foolproof
3. Nowhere in Africa
4. La Grand Seduction
5. Sur Le Seuil
6. Les Invasions Barbares
7. Spellbound
8. Russian Ark
9. Whale Rider
10. Bus 174

if we include 2002 releases that we got a chance to see in 2003:

1. Dogville - Lars von Trier - my mind's unanimous winner
2. Squint Your Eyes (Zmroz Oczy) - Andrzej Jakimowski
3. The Purified - Jesper Jargil (a documentary about Dogme 95)
4. Blind Spot: Hitler's Secretary - André Heller (documentary but widely released)
5. Russian Ark - Aleksandr Sukorov
6. City of God - Lund and Meirelles
7. Das Experiment - Oliver Hirschbiegel
8. Man on the Train - Patrice Leconte
9. Barbarian Invasions - Denys Arcand
10. The man without a past - Aki Kaurismaki

par72...nice list. For some odd reason, none of the major crtics have included Lilya 4-Ever on their list. If someone can tell me a more heartfelt, sensitive, and affecting film...I'd be glad to listen.

I saw "Lilja 4-ever" in the autumn 2002, and for me that was the best film that year. The film was brutal, and made me think. Lukas Moodyson is one of the most gifted directors to emerge in the 90's. "Show Me Love" (Fucking Åmål) was also good.

Where ya'll live, did City of God come out in 2002 or 2003? Some critics put it on their list last year and others put it down for this year. Sometimes all this release-date nonsense just confuses me.
