I saw it on the "Films from South"-festival in Oslo in 2002. However, it didn't come to regular cinemas here before 2003. The film is OK, but not as good as (almost) everyone claims. A fair ganster movie. But it's nice to know that a Brazilian film can make it into European and (Northern) American cinemas.

I think it's difficult to say what's the best film made in 2003 now. We probably haven't seen the best of last year yet. The Chinese film David Rosenbaum voted for as best film of 2003, "Platform", for instance, was made in 2000 according to IMDB. Have anyone of you seen it? It looks good. I probably don't get to see it before the DVD is released, though.

Play.com have all three movies of Jia Zhangke on DVD! I will order "Platform" right now.

If you mean Jonathan Rosenbaum of the Chicago Reader, his best of 2003 are Spike Lee's 25th Hour and Jafar Panahi's Crimson Gold.
In 2002, his favorite is Corpus Callosum followed by PLATFORM.

OK. Maybe I looked at the wrong list. But my point was that we won't see many of this year's best films before next year, or maybe the year after that.

1. Dogville

Nothing else I've seen this year even comes close.
