What are the best books on the history of world cinema, including (of course) foreign film? (General history, not director specific)

I want to purchase some so I can appreciate films even more.

An imporant book for me has been "Derek Malcolm's 100 Personal Best" (I think that's the title. Just search for Derek Malcolm on amazon.co.uk). It's not a normal film history book , but a selection of what he thinks is the 100 best films ever made, from "Birth of a Nation" to "Raise the Red Lantern". It was because of this book I was introduced to directors like Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Victor Erice.

Thank you!! I looked it up on Amazon and have ordered a used copy.

Are there other books?

A couple of other books I would recommend that offer a good introduction to world cinema but also feature independents and lesser known titles...

* The Off-Hollywood Film Guide
by Tom Wiener
- a nice compendium of foreign and independent titles

* The 100 Best Films to Rent You've Never Heard Of
by David N. Meyer
- not as many foreign titles but a nice book nonetheless.

* The A List: 100 Essential Films
edited by Jay Carr
- The National Society of Film Critics' chooses 100 essential films, including many foreign titles. In-depth essays on each film.

David A Cook "A History of Narrative Film"
Walter Kerr "The Silent Clowns"
Ephraim Katz "Film Encyclopedia"
James Agee "Agee on Film"
Francois Truffaut "Hitchcock/Truffaut"
Marcel Pagnol "Cinematurgie de Paris" not available I believe in English
