Basic Foreign Film Info?

I'm in highschool, and I'm doing an independent study next semester. It's going to be a general survey of European film, and I'm thinking I will spend about a month on French cinema, a month on Italian, and so on. I need a list of a few movies (3-5 perhaps) from each region that will give me the best taste of cinema in that country. I also want to learn a brief HISTORY of the cinema in that region. If anyone could suggest films/directors/actors that I should investigate, as well as any internet sources for the sort of general histories that I am after, that would help me a lot! Thanks!

Here are some classics that I would recommend:

France
A bout de souffle (Breathless) - Jean-Luc Godard
The 400 Blows - Francois Truffaut
A Man and a Woman - Claude Lelouch

Italy
The Bicycle Thief - Vittorio De Sica
L'Avventura - Michelangelo Antonioni
La Dolce Vita - Federico Fellini
