Japanese sand dune film

I'm pretty sure this is a Japanese film - I remember watching it in film class a few years ago. It was a really sombre movie about a girl who becomes trapped at this guy's home, which is surrounded by these huge sand dunes. Kind of a strange love story - they try to escape, but the sand is always there. I have a feeling it may have been called Yellow or something like that.
Sound familiar anyone?

Wasn't it the man trapped in the girl's home, surrounded by huge sand dunes? If so, then surely, Woman of/in the Dunes ,original title Suna no Onna, directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, 1964. Excellent, like so many from Japan!

The film I was thinking of was the Woman of the Dunes, but perhaps I was getting the film's title confused with Yellow Earth.. that sounds familiar too. I know we watched a LOT of films in that class, and some of them have blurred together a bit.
Who directed Yellow Earth?
