Exhibition rights for Foreign Film {Almodovar}

Postby marz62 » Fri Mar 09, 2001 4:32 pm

Hello...this is a LEGAL question...Is it permissable for a 'professional organization' to rent a theatre space, charge money {ticket/admission}, and then play a movie on DVD?....How is licensing acquired?...If this is NOT legal, is there an exception under 'fair use' laws for "educational purposes"?...Please respond, Michael

I'm no legal expert, so maybe someone more qualify can comment, but the FBI warning at the beginning of the DVDs definitely states that they are intended for home use only. Renting space and charging admission, even for educational purposes, will seem to violate that "home use" stipulation.

Your best bet is to call the legal department of the company that produced the DVD. Look for the company on the packaging and then call Los Angeles information. Many times the company will give you written permission if they approve.
