Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (read as Wo Hu Chang Long) refers to the fact that there are lots of experts (skilled talents) lurking around ... and hence, dangerous ...

Coincidentally, in the film ...
Chang Chen's character is named as "Hu" (tiger) and
Zhang Ziyi's character is named as "Long" (dragon) ...

There were just a lot of jack asses laughing at @#%$ that wasn't funny and being really, really annoying. Can't quite remember being over five years ago, but wow I never hated the experience more.

Off the cuff, I'd say, Schlondorff's "The Tin Drum". Possibly my absolute adoration of Grass' novel is to blame, but I thought the film failed to deliver on many levels. First, it turns Oscar into this hideous, monstrous child and you simply want to slap him, while the Oscar of the novel elicits your sympathies while he continues to do the most outrageous things. The screams and the drumming are very unimaginative on a cinematic level. What works brilliantly in the written form does not necessarily translate into good cinema. The crux of the problem is that the film deals with Oscar's story in a realist mode and lacks the breadth, the magic and the mythic qualities of Grass's vision.

I really cant say what the most overrated foreign film is since I am missing quite a few staples from my watched listBUT there have been some that just havent lived up to the hype for me. I remember the buzz surrounding The Crying Game when it first came out years ago and quite frankly once I watched it I was like Thats it? Any yes, I did know! Dont get me wrong. I love me my Neil Jordan and I do like this movie. I just think when I watched this I had already started the descent to becoming the desensitized person I am today. Another movie that couldnt live up to the hype for me is Battle Royale. I searched for this movie and waited and waited and waited for it to be available through Netflix. When I finally saw it I just thoughtmeh. For being at the top of most peeps disturbing movie lists, it just didnt deliver. That brings me to Man Bites Dog. I really never made it past the first 15 minutes so I guess I cant really judge something I havent seen all the way through. If given proper motivation I will revisit this one.

I was none too impressed with The Crying Game either, although I'm admittedly poor in my Neil Jordan viewing, have a couple on the long lost art of VHS that I haven't (and quite possibly never will) get to. Michael Collins is on my list for 1996 films to see.
