What are your personal favorite foreign language
(and also English language) films revolving around a
(real or imagined) island and please say why, for anyone/s named ?

L'Avventura directed by Antonioni!

Most of this movie takes place on a deserted rocky island off the coast of Sicily where Anna disappears on an outing.

And then there is "Lord of the Flies" which is certainly not one of my favorites.

Man of Aran (1934) - I knew there was at least one film I could think of. Also from Michael Powell is I Know Where I'm Going and Edge of the World.

Right now only
Cast Away by Robert Zemeckis, and Castaway by Nicolas Roeg came to my mind. Both are great and recommended for everyone.

Il Postino, romantic slush but well made.

Battle Royale, anyone with a little knowledge of Japanese youth culture over the last 20 years or so will understand exactly where this is coming from.

I know there are a lot more but my mind's drawing a blank at the moment.

now that you mention Il Postino, I remember La Terra Trema.

edit: It turns out that it's set in a fishing town in Sicily. Huge island, that. The movie has an insular feel nothwithstanding.

Somehow I doubt the film "The Island" will make it into the list despite the cast.

Some worthy films have already been mentioned above. I'll add Terence Malick's 1998 masterpiece The Thin Red Line.
