Nice post, A. I'm a fan of a number of films on your list. Will try to get to the ones I haven't yet seen. And looking forward to your '07 selections.

I did a quick look, and yep I've seen more films from 1907 than I have from 2007.

I could be led to believe 1907 was a more interesting year for movies than 2007. And I've seen about 80 new films last year... and only a handful from 1907.

Anyway, maybe this link will awaken your enthusiasm for the past year.

I'm sure all of us would like to see a list with your discoveries in 2007, R6dw6C.
And I'm looking forward to lists by arsaib, wpqx, hengcs, and hoepfully also some others.

Same as every year, I'll start by listing all of the "new" films I've seen in 2007 by my initial rating. My opinion on certain films might have changed since then, but I don't rate movies anew, until i see them again. Ratings reflect my initial emotional and intellectual response to a film, meaning the way I see them compared to the rest of film history. Of course a lot of the films have undergone personal re-evaluation since, but that will be better reflected in my "Top" lists.
Icluded are films which got released into German cinemas (and which i hadn't seen before), as well as TV movies and direct-to-DVD releases. I also include films I've seen at a festival or at the cinema or on TV in a foreign country.

PS: It's interesting to note that Olivier Meyrou, who easily topped my 2006 list with his debut masterpiece Au-delà de la haine "Beyond Hatred" (2005), has also made the highest rated film which I've seen in 2007. Still, the discrepancy between a rating of 97 out of 100 and 72 out of 100 is immense. Don't know how the numbering in this post appeared, btw... I can't get rid of it...

From your seemingly low ratings did you consider this a weaker year for cinema or just lacking any outstanding masterpieces?

Regarding your last four films, are those too bad to be rated or were you just unable to come up with a rating on first view?

No Country for Old Men was my front runner once I saw it, and I've seen nothing since then to change my mind.

I've posted my opinion on the movie year 2007 in post #7 on this thread. So far, I consider it both a weak year, and lacking any masterpieces.

The last 4 Films weren't rated by me, because I had given up rating when I saw Ex Drummer , couldn't come up with any coherent opinion after I saw Twentynine Palms (also the print I saw was too dark), and just wanted to relax and enjoy American Gangster (it worked, though I got bored at times), and Hostel: Part II (which I enjoyed immensely, though the rating would have probably been the second worst of the year, if I had bothered to concentrate on the film). There are no films too bad to be rated (as you can see with my 0 rating of "Distance").

I'm anxious to see your list, wpqx.

And just in case, I wanted to mention once more that the ten films I rated the best, do NOT represent my Top 10 for 2007.

I'd look for my list to go to press somewhere around August at this rate. Hopefully I'll get to a theater a couple more times before the Oscars. I'm embarrassed however with your list and how many foreign films you've seen, really puts me to shame. Unfortunately the best foreign film I've seen this past year (Hana) wasn't even released in theaters so it wouldn't even technically qualify.

I've been thinking about some of my recent movie lists and looking at some of the work that went into them. I thought I may be developing a prejudice towards modern cinema and I can't explain it. As I'm preparing to update my most recent film list I'm wondering what if any films from the last five years would even make the cut. Not to say movies have been getting worse, far from it, there are more films from the last decade that I'd rate five stars than in probably any decade before, I just don't know how to put them up against films like Citizen Kane and Sunrise, etc.

Hmm, I can understand your concerns a bit. Maybe you just need a little more time, for the last years to pass in memory, so that you can see the films without being influenced by their surroundings (media hype, topicality, up-to-date techniques or fashinable filmmaking, etc.,etc.). But I don't think that could be a problem with you, so I am at a loss to come uop with any logical explanation.

If you are unable to compare recent films with older ones, maybe you should come up with a new rating/comparative system (I know I had to adjust several times during the last 9 years, as my opinion on what to expect from a film has changed so often). Or maybe it is simply that one cannot "objectively" compare many films from 2007 with movies made in 1931. It could be like comparing Picasso with Leonardo Da Vinci. They come from different times and have different priorities.

But as I don't seem to have anything useful to say... this problem is a universal one. How do you compare things?

Re: Best Films of 2007

Well I'd say that arguably the best film I've seen the past year (for the first time) was Michael Haneke's 71 Fragments a film which I certainly intend to include on my next list, but I don't even remember the last time I saw a new film and thought "this is top 100 good". Its as if I only watch new films to judge them as candidates for a year end list, perhaps leaving out their place in the general film lexicon.

I'd say the greatest reason might be age. When I was 16 or 17 watching movies was almost a way to figure out what would go in a top 100. Once I had a pretty decent list it then became harder and harder to let new entries in (similar to America's immigration policy I suppose). So I'd like to revisit a lot of the films I initially was impressed enough to put on a list and see if they still belong. If I ever finish this update and you see a host of films from 2002 onward then assume I worked out my block.
