Not to detract from your list, but one of the things I did was to group films by when they were released here (in Chicago or in the US in general). So although you have several good choices, some of them wound up on my 2005 list, but if you got them in '04 then I am envious. Nice to include the Incredibles, which believe it or not was my #1.

I certainly didn't get them earlier, just came to this late with imdb based listing. I'm ever further behind with recent films these days, in fact my viewing frequency has slowed down quite a bit.

I also go by the U.S. release dates (at least for now). Innocence, Howl's Moving Castle, The Weeping Meadow, 2046 and Nobody Knows were all distributed here in 2005. But the way things are looking now, distribution wise, I'm not sure if we'll get to see a film like Meadow in the future.

I use the U.K. release dates which is why if "Innocence" makes the list, it'll come under 2006 whereas "Howl's Moving Castle" and "2046" made the 2005 list with "The Consequences of Love" very highly rated as well. It seems sensible to keep to this method as it also shows the worldwide variations in release dates.

Cheers Trev.

Yes, I am also in favor of national release dates. The films I list every year have been released in this time here in Germany.
It's interesting to compare and see, and that's also the reason why I mark released and unreleased films as such, on my year end lists.

From four on your list I've seen, three would be on mine,

- Dare mo shiranai - Hirokazu Koreeda
- Dogville - Lars von Trier
- Elephant - Gus van Sant

One I liked much (seen it again since), but wasn't that great for me
- The Dreamers - Bernardo Bertolucci

one I don't know much about
- Control Room - Jehane Noujaim

and all the others I've wanted to see since they came out (and eventually I will!).
Thanks for your contribution, looks like a list that could come from any of our members
