I remember we had this on the old boards, and I guess it's kind of helpful to see what film other users are into at the moment. I've posted June, cause I haven't written the log for July yet (yes, I know we have August already, but I'm a lazy guy with little time).
As mentioned before, if you are interested in a film, just ask, and I'll give you my thoughts, so if you don't wanna hear me commenting a film, Don't mention it
I put it in the best & worst category, because I rated all the films, he, he...

My way of keeping track is the Last film seen thread, and even that I don't always update. I'm a little disappointed in your rating of The Saddest Music in the World. I absolutely adored this film, and thought it was one of the most original and interesting films I had ever seen in my life. The unique quality of the film alone is enough to make it one of my favorites, and a top pick from the past year. Plus I'm also a HUGE fan of the Kids in the Hall, so the fact that Mark McKinney was in it, earned tremendous points for me.

Now I believe you are a tougher critic than I am, which may explain the absence of any **** ratings, or maybe you just really weren't overly impressed with any film you saw that month. Personally Balthazar is one of my all time favorites, but it has different effects on different people. Perhaps I'll start making annotations in my film cagalogue over which films I see on what dates. It's a new month so I can start it off right with at least a favorite of yours, Theo Angelopoulus's Ulysses Gaze.

I have my new rating system only since November last year, and I must admit, that I rarely give a film a **** rating. But this isn't so tragic, because a ***1/2 rating means a masterpiece on my scale
But I've only started making complete viewing logs, since I've become a member on www.listology.com.
Here's an interesting overview: www.listology.com/content...t_id.17639

**1/2 is a good rating, kind of a B (or B-) in the US, meaning that i normally thoroughly enjoyed the film. To be true, I was very disappointed by the film, because I had already seen Archangel and The Heart of the world (the latter got a **** / **** rating!), and my expectations were too high. But the rating dosen't reflect my disappointment (at least i hope so). I like Maria de Medeiros very much, am a fan of Isabella Rossellini, and Mark McKinney was outstanding in this (as he is in every film I've seen him in), on the technical side there also aren't any flaws, I like Maddin's approach, the photography, the overall style. The problem was the story, which was very conventional, as a satire it was too flat, as a comedy too moody, and as a whole, it didn't take itself serious enough. Maddin discusses many grave issues, and it could've been a great depression satire/ melodrama, but the melodramatic moments also don't achieve any depth, and are just played out for fun, and the fun - well, isn't funny. It was like Maddin had a bit spare time between projects, and wanted to take it easy. That's okay with me, but it doesn't make a remarkable film.
BTW, a friend of mine who is a film student was blown away by the film, and totally enthusiastic (but I think it's maybe because he hasn't seen any other films by Maddin).

Balthazar left me very impressed, therefore the ***1/4 rating (A-), but I need to see it again. May get to be one of my all time favorites. The atmosphere was pure magic. The only problem with me was, that I didn't "get" it all, as there was so much in the picture.
I hope you'll enjoy Ulysse's Gaze. A film enthusiast i like to read rated it * star and called it unfilmic and pretentious.

For a second I thought you watched a ton of movies, then I saw that half of them were Lumiere movies. I still don't know the aversion to **** films, but well some critics are rough. I know someone who literally wouldn't give any film a perfect rating.

I'm quite surprised that you find the time -- every day -- to watch 3 to 4 films. Many are Lumiere, as wpqx mentioned, but most aren't. Good for you.

I also like the Lithuanian giant Sharunas Bartas quite a bit from what I've seen (the 2 films you mentioned plus a couple more). Would love to see more of his work.

I may seem a bit harsh with my ratings, but I personally think, that I may not be strict enough
There are some **** star films I`ve seen, but it doesn`t necessarily mean, that those are the best. "The Mother and the whore" (***3/4 / ****, the last time I saw it) for example would rank higher than some **** star films. The rating reflects my overall opinion of each single movie. So sometimes I can watch a great film with minor flaws, which is better than a perfect one
The Lumiere`s shorts were really astonishing, but I may have been a bit weary, when I afterwards watched some other shorts. Imo it doesn`t make a big difference if one watches five feature films in a row, or 5 short films. In both cases the concentration doesn`t suffice to watch them all properly, to the disadvantage of the films seen last. And it`s even more difficult, if the films resemble each other.
After reading some good reviews on the shorts by Robert W. Paul, James Bamforth, James Williamson, and George Albert Smith, I must see them again. But I think the "camerawork" is best in the Lumiere shorts.
As for Bartas, those were my first two films by him, which i saw in a row, and i would love to see more. It was a great movie-going experience, and I didn`t really understand the problems with his films. They seemed very simple to me, the narrative was clear, and the symbolism wasn`t obscure.
I`d like to know, where you saw some of his other films, and if they`re available anywhere (with subs?).
