Nagisa Oshima's erotic masterpiece is based on the true story of an ex-prostitute and her deadly affair with her master. Though Oshima and the editor were arrested in Japan for violating the country's strict decency act, it really is about art, not porn.

Oshima was an irritant. He now does game shows.

Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano - now there's an irritant - also does game shows. That's modern day Japan, where TV is celebrity.

And yet Kitano is celebrated as one of Japan's best directors! Sort of the Japanese John Woo, without Woo's virtuosity [for violence, that is]. Imagine Ozu doing game shows. Or Naruse. Or Kobayashi. Or . . .
