I've only recently started reading Jonathan Rosenbaum's writings on film, but he's become a quick favourite. Any other good film writers to recommend?

Without a doubt my favorite film critics are Vincent Canby and Janet Maslin of The New York Times. Unfortunately, they're both retired now.

One of my favorites is David Walsh who writes film reviews for the World Socialist web site "www.wsys.org". He is very talented and looks at movies from a unique social perspective (you don't have to be a Socialist to appreciate his insights).

Easily, Stanley Kauffmann is the doyen of American Film Critics. Writes for The New Republic (for the last 40+ years). After Kauffmann, John Simon.

Ray Carney is the foremost critic and proponent of American independet film. He sees through all the BS of Hollywood and finds those filmmakers who are trying to express something unique with film. Check out http://people.bu.edu/rcarney/indievision/indievismain.htm for his writings on indie film. They are controversial, inspirational and most importantly, unique.

Thanks for the tip, BEK. I've been an admirer of Ray Carney's writings since I found his website (http://people.bu.edu/rcarney) a couple months ago while searching for some good writing on Carl Dreyer. His site was the best one I found, and incidentally, there were also some extensive pieces on John Cassavetes. I think Carney's writings are invaluable to the appreciation of both these filmmakers. I second your recommendation.

I dont follow reviews too often, usually word of mouth, web sites, etc.however David Denby in the New Yorker just seems to dislike movies so much with loads of anger.Anthony Lane though, also of TNY enjoys himself very much and is hilarious to read not at the expense of the film.

Just to make you all aware: Ray Carney, the foremost American independent film critic, has a new website registered. www.cassavetes.com

Please visit, read, and be inspired. Hopefully if you're a promising filmmaker, he will teach you how to explore what truly matters to the art of filmmaking.
