Have you guys noticed how Wilder's films age so well? I mean all his films (even the WAY early ones) still are as funny, ironic, cynical & acidic as ever.

The Apartment
Sunset BLVD
The Lost Weekend
Avanti
Some Like it Hot
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

Wow. I only just realised how few of Wilder's films I've seen. I find Stalag 17 a little irritating. The Apartment is my favourite by far. At one stage inmy life I had to watch it on a regular basis in order to maintain my sanity. I think Shirley Maclaine's performance in that film is one of the finest in screen history.

Wilder is one of the few directors who made film which could appeal to mainstreem audiences as well as people more attracted to art house films. It doesn't sound like much but I'd be hard pressed to come up with 5 other directors who succeed so effortlesly in that field.
