I think he was looking for foreign language films, actually, mir. The Shining is a very good horror film, but doesn't qualify here. Go with (as said elsewhere) The Eye, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Nosferatu (original) and YES! Vampyr (EXCELLENT!) but also try Chinese Ghost Story and, if you can find it, "Tombs of the Blind Dead" also known as just "The Blind Dead." May be out of print, but very good horror. The follow-up "Return of the Blind Dead" I found just silly, but others have praised it and even thought it better than the first. Posh and Tosh!

I just saw Clouzot's Les Diaboliques for the first time the other day, and I can't praise it highly enough. Rumour has it that Hitchcock fought for the rights, but he could not have made a better adaptation. Still shocking in its way.
