I assume we're talking about the Juliette Binoche Chocolat, and not the Claire Denis one?

Ahh, Chocolat--! As a matter of fact I own that movie, It's pretty good. S'not really a foreign film, though (I think there is a foreign-language film of it, though) It was touching and clever, but I liked the background music best of all.

I don't know about the film with Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche, but I DO know that the film "Chocolat", directed by Claire Denis, is worth checking out. It came out in 1987 (I think), and it's available on DVD. The two movies are different. One isn't a remake of the other.

Claire Denis directed Chocolate and Isaach de Bankole, Giula Boschi, Fran├žois Cluzet, Jean-Claude Adelin give subtle and thoughtful performances. It is set in Cameroon and is the tale of a young girl and her African friend.
------------------------------------

Lasse Halstrom's "Chocolat" is a piece of confectionary. A tale of a magical chocolate maker, her daughter and the divine presence of Johnny Depp in another well-judged performance. Light and diverting.

The movie with Johnnie Depp and Juliette Binoches is good, forgettable fluff. Worth watching, once.

If you are talking about the movie Chocolat with Juliette Binoche in the lead then, I must say you better avoid it. That chocolat is just too sweet, too escapist, and too good to be true or real. There is not much of a plot in it and the chracters and the setting of the movie look as if they are from some fairytale book. The only good thing about this movie - Juliette Binoche and her smile. There is nothing else worth watching in this movie.

Chocolate(2000) is the epitome of disney-fied fluff as you would get from a foreign film. Like the Brendan Fraiser version of the Mummy is a disney-fied version of The orignal Mummy with Boris Karloff. It just doesn't work.

Can you even believe this film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress, thank goodness for Ridley Scott's Gladiator and the potty-mouth Julia Roberts in Erin Brokovich to save us from this wretched film. It was supposed to be set in France, WHY are they speaking English with a hint of a British accent. They do this in all the American films set in non-us place. Examples: Ever Aver with Drew Barrymore, and An Affair of the Necklace with Hilary Swank.
