Books that were actually made into good films-or better than the book

Interview with the Vampire was awful. I think most books that were made into films are awful. But 'Secretary,' which was based on a story by Mary Gaitskill, made into a movie starring Maggie Glyenhall (not sure about the spelling), and James Spader was good.

The ones that come to mind are "Lord of the Flies" (1963) and "Stand By Me" (1986)[Book---Stephen King's 'The Body']

Peter Brook's Lord of the Flies is a good film, but I would suggest inferior to the book.

Charles Laughton's film of Davis Grubb's Night of the Hunter is at least the book's equal.

I am waiting for "Party Monster" to come out. I haven't read James St. James' book yet.

Oh, yeah---hard to believe, but I think that Costner's "Postman" is much superior to the book by David Brin which inspired it.

I think the only movie that's come close to being as good as the book is the Pride and Prejudice mini series on A&E. I loved that mini series, I thought Colin Firth made the perfect Mr. Darcy.

I loved the books and the film:
The Shining
The Green Mile

Better than the book but it’s only based on it:
Battle Royale (based on Lord of the flies)

Films where the did brilliantly with what they had (which was a lot):
Lord of the ring – The fellowship of the ring (extended version especially).
Lord of the ring – The two towers.

I haven't seen Battle Royale, but I thought it was based on a Japanese novel, despite similarities to Lord of the Flies. In any case I sincerely doubt it is superior to Golding's book.

Battle royale is based on a japanese novel and not the lord of the flies, and i thought the movie was better than both books. (although my bieng directly in its target audience probably helped)

It may be based on another book but then the author was most certainly inspired by Lord of the flies. Everyone I know that's seen it automatically mention that connection.
