Re: Alternate Oscars

Well thought out comments, although there's no denying Goodbar had a different effect on me. What's remarkable, given the subjectivity of this enterprise and the high number of potential picks, is that I've enjoyed/admired nearly every film listed, and many can be found near the top of my lists.
Looking at the listed films from '80 to the present, the only movie I am inclined to debunk is Scarface. I'd do that with full knowledge that: there is only one De Palma movie his fans prefer(The Untouchables), and that Scarface has some prominent defenders (including the most popular critic from this side of the pond). The only other film listed I didn't like is The Wall, which I found ineffective and indulgent.
By the way, as far as year of release, I am going according to the world premiere date used at IMDb. I apologize for failing to limit myself in the number of films listed per year, particularly in the 90s films below. I am trying to figure out why I found so many great 90s films. I do make an effort to catch up with older films; several of my all-time faves were released before my birth ('61). Will some of these 90s movies devalue with the passage of time? Is it a consequence of more films from around the globe becoming available? Will the trend continue in this decade? It does make me feel feel optimistic about the future of cinema.

Well, the movies listed for 1929-30, 1940,1943, 1963, 1977,1983 and 1992 actually won Best Picture. Pleasant Surprise: Polanski's REPULSION and CUL DE SAC, AND Egoyan's EXOTICA and THE SWEET HEREAFTER. Simply NOT ok: "Funny Girl" in '68 over Kubrick's 2001.

I completely agree with the Funny Girl remarks. It may be the best musical of the decade, but 2001 is the best film of the sixties. You may also note that the list was almost entirely American, and they only picked one film per year.

Shame about the sequel (Funny Lady) thow, I'd nominate that for 1974 Raspberry award.

I would contend that it isn't even the best musical of the decade - what about My Fair Lady or West Side Story? And I know there are lots of The Sound of Music haters out there, but I'm not one of them.
