Ever see a particular pair of actors and think they have no chemistry together? Well Clive Owen, who's rarely if ever believable as a romantic lead, is paired with Jennifer Anniston, who's NEVER believable as a romantic lead. So put the two together in a movie, and you get absolutely no chemistry whatsover. Thus begins the problem of Derailed.
Neither Owen or Anniston have an irresistable appeal to them, and I found little to no charm in Anniston. Unfortunately people always seem to walk into stories of affairs with a degree of "I've seen it all before" and films have to work extra hard to work. True, this film does have a few twists and turns, but this is the type of picture that belongs on Showtime at Midnight rather than in a mainstream movie theater.
Vincent Cassell plays a heel a little too well, but I don't believe he has the right amount of charisma for this picture. The main highlight comes from RZA, who plays Winston the mail room attendant in Owen's office with a strange love of hockey. RZA isn't the only rapper making an appearance, Xzibit plays Cassell's cohort, who happens to be a thug because his rap career hasn't exactly taken off.
Still these supporting roles don't do too much for the film. As usual there's too much "Why doesn't he just tell the truth?" questions here that make things a little disinteresting after awhile.
