Madonna gets "Swept Away"

That sucks. Rumor has it that there will be a remake of "Swept Away". Madonna will play Raffaella, the rich woman, and Antonio Giannini will play Gennarino (played by his dad, Giancarlo, in the original). It is directed by Guy Ritchie.

I loved the first one, starring my favorite Italian actor, Giancarlo Giannini, so am really curious to see the remake.

Okay, I am slowly coming out of my psychotic fit upon finding out that Guy Ritchie is directing Madonna, of all people, in Swept Away, or rather, Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August, by Lina Wertmuller via 1974 with Giancarlo Gianni. What in Gods name is happening here. First the twin towers gets bombed then this? Is there nothing sacred in this world. Does Guy Ritchie want everything to suck. Does he actually think Madonna can act? Is he insane? Does anyone need to ask if it will Suck? 'Cause we know the answer to that question. Am I the only one totally outraged?

Latest rumours I read on the Richie film is that it's inital response has been so bad, it might end up as a straight-to-video release. And that concludes my concerns with this film.

I can't see Madonna playing the role, but WHO then? I think they should leave the original alone but if this movie "needs" a remake then who is to play those two great actors? Any suggestions? A foreign or an american actress? I can see the actress from Argentina who was in All About My Mother, Victoria Avril. How about Antonio Banderas as Gennarino? Not too great a cast but I would like to see what others suggest.

The movie bombs the box office.

Justice served.

It helps that I really like Madonna, but I really didn't think the movie was all that bad. It wasn't as sharp as the original, and ENOUGH with the montages, but Madonna was belieavable and the relationship had chemistry. It was just a lazy movie and didn't try hard enough to capture the socialist spirit that the original one had going on (partly because the original's politics aren't overly appropriate in North American society today). Still, Madonna LOOKS great, if that counts for something, and Richie somewhat succeeds in filming her like a Monica Vitti of the 21st century (without the cool aloofness and intensity, of course).

Madonna was only believable because she played a cold-hearted b*tch. It was about as far of a reach as another rock star-turned-actress Courtney Love playing a junkie whore.
