What has happened to Artificial-Eye's release of Wang Xiaoshuai's Shanghai Dreams? I thought the film was scheduled for this year. Surprisingly, still no subtitled East Asian DVD. And no U.S. distribution yet for a film which, formally speaking, is closer to the work of fifth generation filmmakers (whose latest "masterpieces" have no problems finding a home) than those belonging to sixth which Wang is part of.

It's due for dvd release 4th December, at the moment it's still doing the art-house circuit though unfortunately there are no dates for Cardiff yet.

A brilliant time is to be had at the dvd rental shops recently, what a fantastic selection especially this last Monday. You want to see a new film, after all there are some very good releases this month, mmm let me see now, they do have "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and they also have……………………………………….!

Yep that's it, that's your choice and you're stuck with it, both major chains, Choices and Blockbusters have 1 new f ilm in stock, talk about catering for your customers, absolutely pathetic… :(

You guys have been spoilt by too much choice! When you are feeling low about the pathetic rentals, do spare a thought for the likes of us who find a couple of 5-6 year-old films on the shelf every six months, as a consequence of one's having pestered them for months, sometimes years. And, the proprietor proudly claims that they are "new" films :" :(

I certainly agree we've been better served in the UK in the past, but things have been going downhill for a while, I think we have been particularly lucky here because the managers used to have a say in their stock and because of the high student population World Cinema was pretty much guaranteed to rent well.

Now the managers have little or no say, the students (and me) are well served for older films but lacking on newer releases. All decisions are made by desk jockey's who would not recognise a good foreign film if it smacked them in the face, all they care about is money, money and more money.

In the end I'll be driven to on-line rental but certainly not with either Blockbuster or Choices.
