I have been interested in foreign cinema since high-school during the eighties.
I started back then with Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Sanjuro, Yojimbo, Ran, Kagemusha, Bad Sleep Well, High and Low, Red Beard among others). I also liked 'Hiroshima, Mon Amour'. I remember 'Breathless' by Godard. 'Betty Blue' and 'Diva' by Jean-Jacques Beineix (whom I met last year at the Seattle International Film Festival's showing of 'Mortal Transfer').
I also remember watching 'L'Aventura' and 'La Dolce Vita' ('The Good Life')... awe, how I would love to be Marcello.
Recently, in the last few years, I really enjoyed two films about schizophrenia (that were better in my opinion than 'A Beautiful Mind'). 'Angel Baby'--an Australian film which won 7 Australian film awards including best picture, best actors and director. 'Angels of the Universe' --an Icelandic film I caught at the 2001 SIFF.
'Amelie' is on my 'best' list as well. I love the way the director utilizes color and narration to tell the story. A great script that one. Great Actors and locale too.
Hope to post again.
