Qn: Good short films.....HELP!

Postby JohnNoone » Fri Jun 17, 2005 2:12 pm

I'm planning on throwing a short films party with some of my friends. One problem: I don't really know of that many.

So far what I have planned is:
Eraserhead
Captain Eo
Vincent
Frankenweenie
Jo-Jo in the Stars

So....I guess my question is
1) What additions would you make to my lineup and (better yet)
2) Where do YOU find out about cool short films. Websites, zines, whatever.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Ok,
1. Eraserhead isn't a short, but watch it anyway!!
2. I can recommend:
The Electric House (1922, Edward F. Cline & Buster Keaton)
A Story of Water (1961, Jean-Luc Godard & Franois Truffaut)
Audition (1963, Milos Forman)
Ich Nicht (1969, Jrg-Michael Baldenius & Wolfgang Petersen)
Dimensions of Dialogue (1982, Jan Svankmajer)
Tango (1981, Zbigniew Rybczynski)
Gagarin (1995, Alexij Kharitidi)
Cousin (1998, Adam Elliot)
Brother (1999, Adam Elliot)
Nicht auf den Mund (1999, Kathrin Feistl)
The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun (1999, Djibril Diop Mambty)
The Heart of the World (2000, Guy Maddin)
Soins et Beaut (2000, Alejandra Rojo)
Candidature (2001, Emmanuel Bourdieu)
Dog (2001, Andrea Arnold)
Eat (2001, Bill Plympton)
Freunde (2001, Jan Krger)
Tu Vois (2001, Franois Ruiz)
Maintenant (2002, Ins Rabadn)
Portrait (2002, Sergey Loznitsa)

But good luck finding them!!

3. I don't find out about cool short films actually, since I don't know anyplace where I could get REALLY valuable info (I mean REALLY!! valuable). Most are just the newest pap.
I watch them on festivals, from old tapes taped from tv, and if some of my favorite directors have made shorts, i try to track them down (sometimes DVD). But there are more and more DVD compilations with good shorts coming onto the market.
Also look at your library or videostore for Films before 1914. Normally you will find lots of shorts there, many good ones!

Have fun with the films, I'd love to see capt. eo again (loved it as a kid), and the two Burton shorts are really great. Haven#t heard of Jo-Jo in the stars though.

By all means see Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas directed by Selick. Animated, 75 minutes long, and PURE MAGIC. (DVD also explains how they did the animations.)

I could watch this over and over. Fun, enjoyable, wonderful graphics and music and characters.

Believe me, it is pure magic.

Bus 44

Short film from China, powerful and emotive, could have easily been turned into a full length feature but the compact nature of it just adds to it's strength.

Dangle

Great little comedy short. You know how excited a little kid can be when they find they can reach the pull string for the bathroom light!

A man wandering on a snowy hill see's a long red cord apparently dangling from the sky, he pulls it once, day turns to night, pulls it again and again and again; you can guess the rest.

Good lighthearted fun.

filmfour.com has decent coverage of short films and has a good list of ones you can download.

Cheers Trev.

I've got to mention The Kiss. Brilliantly constructed humorous short featuring Hugo Weaving. I won't go into detail but it's well worth seeing.

Recently saw three Atom Egoyan shorts and loved them.
1. Open House
2. Howard In Particular
3. Peep Show

Surprised that nobody mentioned Resnais' Pathbreaking "Night and Fog"

Does anyone know the name of the French short of a car tearing through the streets of Paris at dawn, that's pretty much all there is to it but the sense of speed is breath taking.

I think it was probably made during the sixties.

Nah, but I think I've heard of it. Sounds interesting.
Would like to see Egoyan's shorts, in fat even more than the features I haven't seen by him, yet.
As far as i know he tends to experiment more in the short format.
How about some comments on them?
And welome aboard!
