I've made this point several times before, so I'm wasting my breath, but I think it's pointless classing films by country, as there is so much variation even in a single nation's cinematic output.
Having said this, there is something very special to me about the films of Malle and Truffaut in particular, not to mention earlier directors. For me, however, films like Diva, which place style over substance, are disappointing - not what I would term traditionally 'French' films.
But I'm sure others have different views - we all love foreign films, but we also have widely different tastes. Perhaps that's what's so special about this site.
