Let's get this straight people.

As far as music goes, the best movie musical is without doubt West Side Story. Others with excellent music include Les Parapluies de Cherbourg and My Fair Lady.

There are musicals which rate as excellent films with merely very good music, Cabaret and Oliver! to name but two.

Then there are those best forgotten - which I won't name.

in fact i used to hate musical; they are not like a film but like a long-video clip...
but after i had seen Moulen Rogue i realized that Musicals can be "arty" as a film and moreover you dont need to bore yourself to see a too-arty classical film, instead a good-plot,superb-acts,great-musics and dances...
i recommend:
Moulen Rogue
Cabaret
Chicago ( i didnot see but probably a good-film of genre)
--------------------
West Side Story ( it wont fullfill your expectations if you r not American or İtalian or if u r not 50or more years old)

Hate to disagree Tuncay, but West Side Story fulfilled my expectations and I'm a British 19-y-o. One's reception of the film is more likely to depend on one's personal feelings as regards musicals.

there r exceptions...!!! and i saw it when i was 15yo perhaps that is why i did not like it but also Gaz u r a music-student, your preferances may naturally be far more different than those who just listen to music like me...

Please don't shun me, I hated West Side Story. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the music, I can't get dressed in the morning unless "I feel pretty" is playing in the background but I cannot watch that film.

After all the praise I've heaped on the film, I'm inclined to agree that while the score for West Side Story is the best, I'd much rather watch My Fair Lady - it's funnier for one thing.

Are we allowed to include animations? If so, The Lion King is without a doubt my favourite musical. If not, I think West Side Story and Singin in the Rain are two of the few truely great musicals.
