Best site to buy foreign film dvd's?

Postby izzywar » Wed Jun 04, 2003 2:54 pm

I live in the U.S. and just decided to start buying d.v.d's since my local video stores carry very few foreign films. Most websites i went to don't carry most of the movies i am looking for either (nothing too obscure). Any suggestions?

I order most of my DVD's from DVDPlanet, as I am a big fan of the Criterion line up, which is mostly made up of foreign films. You can check out the Criterion site at :

I also order from DeepDiscount :, not the greatest foreign line up, great prices, free shipping.

3 good mostly Asian sites :, good selection, though slow to ship, usually a tad higher than HKFlix, but usually ship quicker, great prices, site is hard to navigate, haven't ordered from them yet, though in the Criterion Collection Forum, several people said this is a good site, ship quick, staff is helpful.

Note, I'm a big fan of Asian movies, currently Panaroma is releasing the Century of Asian cinema, the 3 asian mentioned sites, you can order the Century of Asian cinema movies, I currently have 24 eyes, Tragedy of Japan, Street of Love and Hope, etc. If you like Asian cinema, you might want to look into these?, British site, mostly Region 2 Pal format, if you have a multi system DVD, not a problem, I suggest you get a Malata 520, I got mine from, they have several others, some less than $100. I've ordered from this site several times, I have Apu Trilogy, Dekalog, Time for Drunken Horses, etc. All GREAT movies, the folks at this site are GREAT folks, they response to your questions, note prices are in British Pounds, will take credit card, ship all over the world, I recommend this site if you have the proper DVD player., Canadian site, some of the films are Region 1 or 0, get the multi system DVD, then you can order any of the selections here. I've purchased 2
Luis Bunuel films : The Young and the Damned (Los Olvidados) and The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz. Also, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Great movie), Millennium Mambo (not great, but decent), La Dolce Vita, etc. Note, a lot of crap on this site as well, check them out, a lot of gems here, some of which I noted. Site shows prices in Canadian dollars, US and Euro. Ship everywhere, great service, the guy Mark is very helpful.

I agree the Facets site is good, but they're prices are very high.

There are lots of other sites, but these are the ones I normally us and I'm quite pleased with all of them.

Good luck and welcome to the club!

For British users here, MovieMail is surely best as you can rent as well as buy by mail order. The rental system is indispensable. Years ago, i used to buy some from Mr Benson's (mentioned above) but this is a far better and more knowledgeable company, specialising in world cinema, though they do have all the stuff that's available in the UK. Check out their website (they do catalogues 2x year and regular newsletters, too, have some top writers, and one whose taste is flawless);
