On the American side it would be David Lynch. He is the most thoroughly exciting and interesting director working today. For the foreign market though my money is with Zhang Yimou, undoubtably the best filmaker to emerge in the past twenty years.

I'd like to include Makhmalbaf & Majidi - two incredible Iranian directors and contemporaries of the great Abbas Kiarostami.

Afraid Kieslowski doesn't qualify for greatest _living_ director - he died in 1996 - but there's no question he was a great director.

Since Godard is still making films, there's no question it would be him (how can u argue against that?) I wish Bergman was still directing and not just writing obscure plays and scripts. The best living American directors I think are Scorsese, Altman, Allen, Spielberg (leave me alone) and Coppola. The best living foreign ones; Jacques Rivettte, Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, Aki Kaurisami, Almodovar, Angelopolous, Olivieria, and Wong Kar-Wei.
