25 Greatest Films of All Time

Postby cola » Tue Feb 27, 2001 2:27 pm

A lot of "film critics" I've met have adopted AFI's top 100 American films as their Bible of the greatest movies ever made. There's a problem - what about all the other countries? Here's my all-inclusive list of the 25 Greatest Films Ever Made. I'm interested in knowing what you all think.

4. VERTIGO by Alfred Hitchcock
5. THE SEARCHERS by John Ford
6. ANDREI RUBLEV by Andrei Tarkovsky
7. PERSONA by Ingmar Bergman
8. THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC by Carl Dreyer
9. CITY LIGHTS by Charles Chaplin
10. SEVEN SAMURAI by Akira Kurosawa
11. MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA by Dziga Vertov
12. THE BICYCLE THIEF by Vittorio de Sica

Looks a heck of a lot like the 1992 Sight and Sound Poll.

A very "safe" list. Many will be pleased. Noticed that only one film/one director made the list whereas two or more masterpieces of a director could have made the list easily, according to the nature of the choices, i.e. Renoir's "Rules of the Game" & "Grand Illusion", Bergman's "Persona" & "Seventh Seal". Was it a case of... "oh, we've got a Bergman in already so let's put a Godard this time"? or "The Grapes of Wrath" is good but we already have "The Searchers".

sort of... ;)

I agree "Grand Illusion" could go on. But the rest I feel are pretty good choices.

Please people this are pretty bad choices "The Yards"? what the heck were you thinking about you are out of your mind if you are going to reccommend an american film why not something like "The Manchurian Candidate" or something new Like "Twin falls Idaho" I know you were just kidding with "Battlefield Earth" right? I sure hope so.

"Pleasure is not an infallible guide, but is the least fallible." -W.H. Auden (PS. The Yards was an intresting, solid film with admitedly some faults, but with a lot of promise as well... As for Twin Falls Idaho, it sucked.)

I guess that is what makes this site intresting, "The Yards" vs "Twin Falls Idaho" both very american but one has potential and hope for american film making The other is just your typical Hollywood crap. Oh well to each is own.
