Female directors

Postby john-5 » Sat Jan 05, 2002 6:00 pm

Not many female directors prominent on the site, from what i've seen,so here are some films which should be worth considering(in no particular order).I've certainly not seen them all(so the list is based in part on my reading and on other critical opinion),but i've asterisked three i'd especially recommend, which may not be very well known.I'd be grateful for opinions on films by women (the best/most overrated/personal favourites)-whether on my list or not. This at least may highlight some excellent work.
Campion:The Piano,An Angel at my Table
Akerman:Jeanne Dielman,La Captive
Nair:Salaam Bombay,Monsoon Wedding
Samira Makhmalbaf:The Apple,Blackboards
Riefenstahl:Triumph of the Will,Olympia
Denis:Beau Travail,Chocolat
Gorris:Antonia's Line,A Question of Silence
Meszaros:A Diary for my Children
Tlatli:Silences of the Palace*
Shepitko:The Ascent*
Sagan:Madchen in Uniform*
Amaral:The Hour of the Star
Solntseva:Poem of the Sea,The Enchanted Desna
Muratova:The Long Farewell
Dash:Daughters of the Dust
Deren:Meshes of the Afternoon
Martel:La Cienaga
Duras:India Song
Dulac:The Smiling Madame Beudet,The Seashell and the Clergyman
Varda:Cleo from 5 to 7,Vagabond
Armstrong:My Brilliant Career
Lupino:The Bigamist,The Hitch-hiker
Trotta:The German Sisters
Zheliazkova:The Attached Balloon
Gomez:One Way or Another

Thanks, John-5 - this is a useful list. Have you seen Roboh's CEMENTINE TANGO? Perhaps some Yvonne Rainer should be on the list. I think I would asterisk CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 and JEANNE DIELMAN. I think THE VIRGIN SUICIDES wouldn't be totally out of place on such a list (if A. Holland, why not S. Coppola?) What can you tell me about SILENCES OF THE PALACE?

Good suggestions-haven't seen Yvonne Rainer films, understand Film about a Woman who..is her most famous.Silences of the Palace is a Tunisian film, debut of Moufida Tlatli,(who's since done The Season of Men).An intimate depiction of the (suppressed)lives of women, particularly a serving girl who's a fine singer,in a Tunisian palace in the 1950's.Sensitive,delicate and thoughtful,a colourful mosaic;well-liked when shown at our film society a few years ago.Best wishes.

i'd like to add,no i've not seen Cementine Tango. Also that you're quite right to want to asterisk Cleo from 5 to 7(which i enjoyed,is doing well in the foreignfilms poll, was also one of the British Film Institute's 360 Classics),and Jeanne Dielman(which,as you know,is an extremely important film in the development of feminist cinema.)I asterisked the 3 mainly cos i thought they'd be less well known and might deserve a little extra publicity.Has anyone seen the Zheliazkova film The Attached Balloon, from Bulgaria?(like Romania, a neglected country)
