Appreciation of his work may change by reading his autobiography, knowing that he is especially personal

1 Hour of the wolf
2 Persona
3 cries and whispers
4 the seventh seal
5 the passion of anna
6 autumn sonata
7 scenes from a marriage
8 the magic flute
9 Fanny and Alexander
10 winterlight

I was on a big Bergman kick about 5 years ago, but there are still a couple that really stand out for me (in chronological order):

1. The Devil's Eye
2. The Rite
3. Cries and Whispers
4. Scenes from a Marriage
5. Autumn Sonata
6. From the Life of the Marionettes

And here's a few weak ones:

1. The Touch -- This one comes from my favorite Bergman era, but it just doesn't work.

2. Fanny and Alexander -- Sorry, there are hundreds of directors out there who've made movies like this one.

3. Monika -- Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

By the way, you all should check out 'The Rite' if you haven't seen it yet. If you like the sort of religious angst you find in 'Seventh Seal' and 'Winter Light,' 'The Rite' is a winner. Bergman even has a short cameo appearance as a Catholic priest listening to a confession! Anders Ek gives a fiery performance (quite literally, in one scene).
