My favorite - even over Carrie - is Body Double, it is exquisetly shot, the lead actor Craig Wasson is terrific and very funny and then there's Melanie Griffith's first big role. The brutal murder scene was meant as a joke, a riff on the 'violence against women in horror films' talk show yammering of the time. Watch the one big murder scene and tell me how it is possible to take it as anything but a burlesque. And the studio made him edit it anyway! It's a decent mystery, a biting social commentary, it has two great performances, that shimmery Pino Donaggio music and lots of sex, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood even makes a guest apperance. Did anyone else hear the rumor that DePalma was so interested in the porn business he went on to direct the hardcore movies NightDreams and Cafe Flesh under a psuedonym? They were certainly not the usual adult films of the time. Look at the scene in Body Double where Holly Body -Melanie Griffith - shoots her movie see if it doesn't have the same surreal atmosphere of those two films. Just a thought.
