top ten directors

Postby wpqx » Sat Feb 15, 2003 10:19 pm

Here's one I don't think I have seen yet. An interesting topic that has probably rattled through everyone's mind at least once. So I'll get the ball rolling, and feel free to voice your displeasure.
1. Stanley Kubrick
2. Martin Scorsese
3. David Lean
4. Elia Kazan
5. Ingmar Bergman
6. Luis Bunuel
7. Jean Luc Godard
8. Federico Fellini
9. Woody Allen
10. Buster Keaton

I also realize that Hitchcock, Renoir, Kurosawa, Ford, Hawks, Ray, and many others aren't on here, but I can only fit ten.

John Ford
RW Fassbinder
Abbas Kiarostami
Ken Jacobs
David Lynch
Stan Brakhage
Alfred Hitchcock
Jean Renoir

and... hmm... let's put John Ford two more times

lists are so silly... but I love them... and they're so useful

You can't ask a film lover this, because there are the directors one knows are "the greats", and then there are ones who may inspire you and personally affect you, but everyone else may hate them. So I kept my list all-American baby!

Orson Welles
Alfred Hitchcock
Buster Keaton
Howard Hawks
John Ford
Charlie Chaplin
Stanley Kubrick
Billy Wilder
Fritz Lang (All his American films are masterpieces)
Woody Allen

Why is Mizoguchi still awaiting due recognition in English-speaking countries? Might as well ignore Rembrandt or Shakespeare.

Mizoguchi is a master no mistake, and yes he should be recognised more, his films are elegant & beautiful, once seen never forgotten. His place is safe in cinematic history,it's just the general film going /loving public who should seek him out!who knows? maybe they might learn something about truly great cinema.
