Haven't seen Sidney Lumet mentioned yet - perhaps not consistently brilliant, but at his best a director of genius with a career of longevity - Serpico, 12 Angry Men, Running on Empty, Dog Day Afternoon, etc. etc.
Gee Gaz,you didn't mention "The Hill' Lument's best film for me,the cinematography is masterful,the acting excellent&connery's best film by a street,a real gritty classic with fine english actors,Harry Andrews is perfect. cheers
