Haven't seen Sidney Lumet mentioned yet - perhaps not consistently brilliant, but at his best a director of genius with a career of longevity - Serpico, 12 Angry Men, Running on Empty, Dog Day Afternoon, etc. etc.

I almost put The Hill but didn't because I haven't actually seen it myself. Promise I will though, especially as Harry Andrews is in it.

wow... very tough to list a top 10... I feel it could change anytime and as I'm really just discovering a lot of classic directors, my list may not mean much.

In no particular order:

Stanley Kubrick
David Lynch
Francis Ford Coppella
Kirosawa
Sergio Leone
Billy Wilder
Alfred Hitchcock
Francois Traufault
Jeanne Pierre Jeunet
Ingmar Bergman

This list changes a lot, mainly after i've seen a movie by one of the people listed below, they often move up in the rankings, but i'll try:
1.Federico Fellini
2.Akira Kurosawa
3.Francios Truffaut
4.Martin Scorsese
5.Ingmar Bergman
6.Jean-Luc Godard
7.Luis Bunuel
8.Paul Thomas Anderson
9.Billy Wilder
10.Robert Altman/Stanley Kubrick/Fritz Lang (can't decide)

1.Andrei Tarkovski
2.Akira Kurosawa
3.Theo Angelopoulos
4.Werner Herzog
5.RW Fassbinder
6.Jean-Luc Godard
7.Fritz Lang
8.Alain Resnais
9.Frederico Fellini
10.Luis Bunuel

But several of my favourite films are by female directors. They perhaps have a harder time creating a body of work? Ideas?

Good to see PT Anderson being mentioned here. Hopefully he will eventually prove himself worthy of inclusion in an all time top 10 greatest list.
