One of the problems with picking foreign films is finding out US release dates. Many films take several years to make their way over here. I kept this in consideration with my list. Believe me the Conformist is a better film than Patton, but it wasn't released until the next year in the US. I can however understand if no one else does as much research.

The vast majority of the films listed by John, Henry and wpqx would make my Top 10 for their respective years. Looking at the films you've listed from the 1960s and 70s, only West Side Story and Suspiria failed to make my Top 10s purely on artistic grounds.I do understand John's by-default listing of the latter, I couldn't come up with a single great film in '77.
There are three well-made films that I detest based on personal moral/political/philosophical points of view. Since I believe evil to be exclusively a human phenomenon, The Exorcist didn't scare me. It's a crass recruitement poster for the Catholic church. I was repelled by the misogynist, puritanical message of Looking for Mr. Goodbar. As a teen, I was seduced by the intensity of the The Deer Hunter's images and performances. Subsequent viewings have revealed the film to be deceitful and racist, with a Victorian take on male friendship and bonding that I find reprehensible. Below my list of 60s and 70s masterpieces (or damn close).

You make valid criticisms of The Deer Hunter. I also first saw it aged 17, and thought it was a magnificent anti-war film. Of course its failings (the racism and failure to properly question American involvement in Nam) have become more apparent since, but its strengths are still just about sufficient for Oscar in a weak year, i think.

Auteur, I respect your sentiments towards Looking For Mr Goodbar and The Exorcist. Although you could justifiably make accusatons of misogyny against it, I really don't think that that is the intention of the film. Although the actions of Keaton's character in the film are portreyed in a bad light, the film is ultimately in paraise of her. It says that promiscuity can have life shattering reprocutions, but it also makes a lot more sense than the western ideals of love and romance. Keaton is initially attracted to the lifestyle we see in the film after her inability to have success via conventional relationships. What the film tells us is that society has decided for us how we are supposed to live our lives, and it is made almost impossible for us to be able to live any other way.

I think it is very good of you to acknowlege the technical strengths of films that don't necissarly appeal to you. To often, we end up denying that a film has any merit whatsoever simply because it didn't appeal to our personal taste.

You made an interesting point about The Exorcist. I'l talk about that later, when I can summon the mental energy.
