I guess in terms of impression, I'll never forget the first time I saw Ozu, Renoir, Bergman, Mizoguchi, Vigo or Tarkovsky, but more importantly, it was directors like Rohmer, Truffaut or Shohei Imamura that filled out my filmgoing experience. Most recently I've been impressed by Ang Lee's early stuff, Pedro Almodóvar, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Claude Sautet, Hayao Miyazaki, Claude Chabrol and Beat Takeshi Kitano. All of these directors have different visions of humanity, but their films approximate real life and improve upon it, so that humanism becomes an ideal worthy of the cinema, and that type of romanticism is why I love the cinema.

Casablanca was the film that did it for me. After that I wandered to see Lawrence of Arabia, Schindler's List, Apocalypse Now, Dr. Zhivago and that did it. My obsession began, and I set out to see all of the AFI's 100 greatest films. After that I wandered to foreign films, with the first two being Wings of Desire and M. Since then the obsession rarely stops. The most recent film to leave me stunned was Bloody Sunday, powerful stuff.

One question? Two interpretations.

The films that moved the medium forward are: Birth of a Nation, Potemkin, Un Chien Andalou, Citizen Kane, Breathless, Last Year at Marienbad, and 2001.

The films with the greatest impact on who I am are these ones I watched before I turned 20:
Pinocchio taught me about ambition. I learned about freedom from Boudu; corruption from Chinatown; moral consistency from Bicycle Thief, repression from One flew over the cuckoo's nest; evil from Garden of the Finzi-Continis; and Rashomon taught me about the subjectivity of truth and the redemptive power of love.
