I think it's a good idea to start with a shorter list containing films you're sure about, and then work your way up.

This is a shorter list, believe me. Only the films I'd give 5 star ratings to. I realize giving Guess Who's Coming to Dinner a 5 star rating makes me seem high, but I quite enjoyed the film, and it winds up being my third Stanley Kramer film on my list. I certainly anticipate the list to grow over the next few years, because there are certainly plenty of films left to see.

"This is a shorter list, believe me."

I know; I was complementing you.

I'm pleasantly surprised that you've seen both The Round Up and The Red and the White. I also expect Silence and Cry to make your list... eventually.

arsaib is right on this one. Looks like I listed too many films in the 00 and 90s threads, and more and more will be thrown out as I rewatch them...
On the other hand, i might have been too sceptic with the 50s and 70s...
Hard to find a common ground if you've seen one film five years ago, and another one five months.

This is also my favorite decade for movies, and I'll definitely include the one Jancso I've seen.

Enjoyed "Guess who's coming to dinner", but I wouldn't list it. Maybe wih a rewatch?

I watched Guess Who's Coming to Dinner years ago (probably about 6 or 7 years now) and I had such a pleasant reaction that it's still carried with me. Plus I have an abnormal appreciation for Spencer Tracy (I mean I watched a good 20 films just because he was in them, and my favorites from other decades will reflect that). Plus there's something truly somber and beautiful watching him in his last film, I have a similar melancholic apperciation for John Huston's The Misfits (which was one of my bubbling under films). Both Gable and Monroe were outstanding in that film, and perhaps never better (although I certainly think San Francisco is a close contender for Gable, ironically also with Spencer Tracy).

This list ignores some of the better acting jobs of the decade, and I think there's only one Richard Burton film listed. However I think his turn in Huston's Night of the Iguana is exceptional, and despite the overly theatrical overtones of it Becket was certainly one of the best acted films of the decade. However as we've already mentioned, keeping the list to the essentials is necessary, because sometimes the overly long lists get a little distracting. Regarding the last two decades though, the films listed are generally easier to come across, whereas the further back you go, the harder it is sometimes to find these films, so for people using these as suggestions for future viewing it helps to keep it small here.

Which Jancs have you seen, A? (I apologize if you've mentioned it elsewhere on this site.)

How about a few of these, wpqx?

(1960 - 64)

Les Bonnes Femmes - Chabrol
A Woman Is a Woman - Godard
Viridiana - Buuel
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs - Naruse
Red Desert - Antonioni
El Verdugo - Berlanga
Before the Revolution - Bertolucci
Trial of Joan of Arc - Bresson
La Jete - Marker
Vidas Secas - Dos Santos
Virgin Spring - Bergman
Chronicle of a Summer - Rouch & Morin

I wasn't as overly impressed with La Jetee when I first saw it. Its style was new to me, and I had a hard time adjusting to the still photography presentation. I have Vidas Secas, but still haven't been able to watch it, and the Naruse film is unknown to me. Most of the other films are bubbling under, particularly The Trial of Joan of Arc, which I find exemplary, but compared to Bresson's next two efforts it just seems a lesser effort. If you care to submit your own list, roll with it. Also I think A's seen The Red and the White, but I don't speak for him.

Thanks for your comments. I'll submit mine eventually; I'd like to do a couple of other decades first, though. But, as you guys probably know, I'm somewhat @#$! about being as thorough as possible, so that might take time.

Well I hope to eventually cover all decades (although possibly just cominging the silent era into one), but I figure as we did before that going with one decade, followed by some input and some discussion is best rather than just leaping into several decades at once and having all of them buried within a few weeks.

Now if I'm not mistaken you still need to work on your 70s and 50s lists, so you most certainly need to get cracking. Once John gets back in action, I certainly anticipate his input, as that man has never backed down from making a list.
