One film I noticed near the bottom (as it looked somewhat alphabetical) was Jia Zhang-Ke's Platform, which is the only one of his films in print in the US I haven't seen. I believe Rosenbaum cited it as his favorite, so my expectations are officially high for it. I still have to tinker with the foreign list. I'm not quite ready to remake my overall 100, I don't think enough changes would be in order. Still need some OTHER people to start chiming in.

Well, I`ve had a terrible night, a terrible day, and a terrible year, and as I was just in the middle of my rambling about my terrible life, and was actually going to talk to somebody ( tell it on a messageboard in every detail ) we actually had a blackout. I mean we realy had a blackout, like for thirty seconds, and if this isn`t a sign of god, than I don`t know what is.
Anyway, I won`t bother you with my life, suffice to say, that I just watched "After Hours", and I was the whole time desperately wishing to exchange my life with Griffin Dunne`s...
Sooo, I just wanted to say, in short, that I seem to remember a time when the board was actually alive, and I wasn`t only talking with four people, and I also wanted to apologize for my miserable overall 100 list, which was really an impulsive compilation, as I threw out almost all pre 1990 movies because of a whim (I honestly thought for a moment, that pre 1990 cinema is almost completely bullshit, and that only after the 90s and with Hollywood films things started to get better, so I took a chance, and the result is on display above). I was just too proud to admit defeat at compiling a personal 100 best (let alone ranked - what a crude joke ), so I figured I had to print SOMETHING, and, well i don`t know.

Just out of curiosity have you had a chance to see Wrong Movement/False Movement from Wenders? It is undoubtedly my favorite film of his, and is an absolutely brilliant compliment to Alice in the Cities, and Kings of the Road. I may also be hyping it more than necessary, but that's just to be expected.

You've mentioned this before, so shame on me i still haven't!! It really doesn't get much attention does it? Perhaps partly cos of the decline in WW's reputation, but it's even less well known than the wonderful but neglected Alice. Too many critics have run for cover since his work went downhill, seem to be denying the quality of his early work (same thing happens in pop music etc- it seems better for an artist's early work if they die or quit before their standard drops, but really if the early stuff is genuinely good, it should still be appreciated, whatever the later career failings.) In short, i stand by early Wim.

As do I. I still haven't seen Kings of the Road, I'm patiently awaiting it's DVD release which I think would be inevitable. I've heard about possibly a boxed set of Wenders earlier films coming out, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Also curious to see Tokyo-Ga.

Glad to have you back. I must say your grading system is indeed a harsh one, as all the film in my top 100 would get my highest rating, but I'm well aware that I judge films on a seemingly easier scale. As for the films on your list I've seen a great deal of them, and can't argue with many, and am not too surprised at your choices. One of these days I swear I'll actually contribute to this thread with a list of my own without cheating.

On my own Top 100 I would also mark maybe 20 as flawless masterpieces. I think there are only few movies that are really perfect.
I'll make a similar thread as John on 500 or more favorites soon, where I'll make more distinctions
