"Simply put: Basanti threatens to offer a patriotic lesson via a text message."

arsaib, this is perhaps the most artfully written damning sentence I've come across. Ironically, I'm glad you watched it, if only to write such a fine review

p.s. - the censor board did get its wind up, only to have a closed-door screening and decide that it actually is an inspiring film! strange are the ways of the censor board in this country!

The end credits listed the # of casualties MIG? pilots have suffered in the last few years: is this a controversial issue in India? Not that the film investigated it with any depth, but obviously the claim was rather bold.

The case of the pilot in the film is based on a real-life incident that was reported in the newspapers about 6-7 years ago. These issues have come up from time to time, like many other malpractices and their resulting debacles, and made headlines for a couple of days. But that is about it. It makes me sad to say that in a country of teeming millions, the life of the average citizen is hardly a matter of concern for the powers that be, whether they belong to the left or the right.

Madhuban, would it be possible for you to make a list like Miklosks of good Indian films, I live in an area where we have several Indian specific dvd/video rental shops plus there is a large collection in our central library. The only thing is they don't appear to have much in the way of older films.

I have the wonderful Apu Trilogy plus Days and Nights in the Forest, Salaam Bombay, The Terrorist and a couple of others but would really like to broaden my range.

Thanks Trev.

Thanks for your list John, I'll take your initial statement as tongue in cheek.

I'll check against the library website first, hopefully they'll have at least a few of the ones listed.

Bandit Queen is on your list, I'm not sure how well my memory serves me but wasn't there an earlier version of this made in the 60's or 70's?

I also forgot to mention in my post that I have the first 2 of Deepa Mehta's elements trilogy (still waiting to see the third).

Cheers Trev.

Yeah, I think John was referring to Imdb's search function.

Imdb?! Me, have to rely on imdb? Outrageous suggestion. Er, apart from my own mastery of the whole enormous subject i've simply prudently checked with my Encyclopedia of Indian cinema, Pocket Essentials Bollywood, the discussion here so far, including Madhuban's recommendations, critics' top 10's, and just out of passing interest of course, suggestions and ratings at imdb- in case, just the faintest off-chance i might have inadvertently forgotten something.

Anyway, purely out of modesty, i've even left some space for Madhuban to add the necessary finishing touches!

p.s- having been born on Groundhog Day, i have certain unexpected advantages for mastery of a subject in record time!

There is some exciting Indian cinema that, ironically enough, doesn't get seen widely in India. Among these, I'd like to mention Murali Nair's three films - "Throne of Death", "A Dog's Day" and "A Story That Begins At the End" (better known as "Arimpara"). Nair lives in the UK and has a company called flyingelephant films. Trevor, it might be easier for you to access his films. I am actually thinking of writing to his company to buy the three films. I found them fascinating!

Good to see you back madhuban (or may I call you M ). Thanks for the info, I need something to ignite my interest due to a run of mediocre films lately, hopefully I'll find that spark soon.

Cheers Trev.
