One new Indian film worth keeping an eye out for is Vishal Bharadwaj's Omkara, which I'm told is ready for release (and thus will be available on DVD shortly thereafter). It's based on "Othello"; Bharadwaj's previous feature, Maqbool, took its cues from "Macbeth." Hopefully, Madhuban will be able to fill us in shortly.

I am watching "Omkara" today. Hopefully, the review will be up over the weekend.

Just to say I m back after a utterly exhausting dissertation submission (and no films watched over 2 months!), and am going back to film watching with a vengeance

Glad to hear it, nothing quite like making up for lost time.

My turn
This list will obviously change with time, but so far of the ones I have seen:

1 Nayak - Satyajit Ray
2 Charulata - Satyajit Ray
3 The Chess Players - Ray
4 Meghe Dhaka Tara - Ghatak
5 Pather Panchali - Satyajit Ray
6 The Music Room - Satyajit Ray
7 Ajantrik - Ghatak
8 Bhuvan Shome - Mrinal Sen
9 Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro - Kundan Shah
10 1947 Earth - Deepa Mehta

The list is rather Bengali-centric...thats because I'm from there. I'd love to see some South Indian films...difficult to access sadly.

Now a best of Satyajit Ray list:
1 Nayak
2 Charulata
3 The Chess Players
4 Pather Panchali
5 The Music Room
6 Devi
7 Teen Kanya
8 Seemabaddha
9 Aparajito
10 Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne

I'm yet to see Kanchenjunga and Aranyer Din Ratri and a few others.

PS. To those who were crying about not having access to Ghatak's films, I have all of them.

Well, you are lucky living in that particular region then.
Could you maybe tell me how many feature-length films and shorts Ghatak has actually made in his career as a filmmaker. I've been wondering this for months, and don't quite trust imdb...

Living in Germany, I have also access to many impressive films, that will probably never see the light of day outside the country if nobody tries to subtitle them...

These are the feature films Ghatak made as far as I know:
Nagarik - 1952, released in '77
Ajantrik (Pathetic Fallacy) - 1958
Running Away From Home - 1959
The Cloud-Capped Star - 1960
E-Flat - 1961
Subarnarekha (The Golden Line) - 1962
A River Named Titas - 1973
Reason, Debate and a Tale - 1974

Other than Running Away From Home I have all the others...yet to see a few of them though.

Very pleased to say that Channel 4 is screening Ritwik Ghatak's The Cloud-capped Star next monday to mark the 30th anniversary of his death. Shame it's only one film but it's one I've wanted to see for a very long time.

Cheers Trev.

Subarnarekha is being screened 28 August, looks like we may have a little season of Ghatak films here.

Cheers Trev.
