Re: Best Films of the Decade

I don't know if I have caught more than five theatrical releases at cinema this year, but watching 50+ films at the Berlinale has certainly helped with my being more up to date.

Luckily I am keeping records of all the films I watch since the end of 1999, so...
But I haven't seen in any year more than your - if I recall correctly - 150+ new releases in 2005

Do I see an arsaib list brewing?

"Brewing" is the key word here. We'll see how long it takes. Anyway, one film on your lists that I'm not familiar with is Into the Arms of Strangers. Is it a doc.?

Yes its about Jewish children smuggled out of Germany in the early years of Nazism. It's subtitle is Stories of the Kindertransport. Which actually makes it the second WWII documentary on my 2000 list. As you probably realize, these lists are constantly up for revision. Every new film I see can potentially crack the list, which is why I just submitted a list when I did. Looking upon them, I probably have some revisions to do as well, I don't think All or Nothing was on my 2002 list. Perhaps one day A and I will finish our top tens from 1895 on up. Honestly I'd rather start with 1927, because a lot of films from 1908 seem very similar to me.

Of the films on your list, i must say Distance seems the most intriguing to me, but as of yet it isn't available on DVD in this country. I'm assuming you caught it at some festival, because I don't even think it played in any theaters here. It's a little surprising considering the critical success Koreeda's three available films have received here. Also I haven't seen anything Wiseman has made since 1976's Meat. Enough on there to give me some suggestions, but I'd like to wait awhile before buying more DVD's, which I'm sure is understandable.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that Distance has never been released in this country. While the film deals with the aftermath of a Japanese cult's biological attack from the mid-90's, it also works well as a post-9/11 allegory. It's subtle and quietly haunting.

Wow! Finally up, and a very nice selection. As expected your selection fits my standards. Most of the films you listed and I haven't seen are one's I missed one way or the other. Hopefully this will change.
Interesting to notice the four differing approaches to structuring our lists so far. I thought of listing films alphabetically at first, but as I don't know the english titles for all of them this would have turned out too unclear. If I listed them by year, some titles would maybe be easier to find... Don't know if my assuption was correct though, as I decided to list them alphabetically (by original title) each year. I also thought of numbering first, but as preferences change over time, this would have been too much work keeping it updated (and would also mean too many rewatches )
As for the ratings, my systems have changed so much since 2000 that I had to do a lot on memory. I first thought to simply include all films with an 80 rating or higher (which means A- or higher, or in words anything from "great" onwards), but then I found out that I had also rated some imo great and essential films somewhere in the 70s. (One even as "low" as 71!). So to hell with my initial ratings, as I decided to trust the developing feelings over time a bit more.

I was able to track down Distance on DVD in Berlin, but had no time to watch it. But maybe a friend will copy it for me.

It will be interesting to see these lists grow and evolve over time, and I hope more people will contribute. I was thinking that we could also go backwards and do similar stuff with earlier decades.
