My Alternate Oscars

Postby wpqx » Tue Jan 16, 2007 8:22 am

I plan on starting more extensive research in this department soon, as I do every year around this time. With facets only a few blocks away availability shouldn't be an issue. This list is subject to extensive modification, and as you'll see some year's I don't even have one choice suitable. Anyways feel free to critique my very personal choices and offer your own alternatives if you can. In the case of foreign films, I have tried to list films based on what year they had their US premiere, which in many cases does not correspond to international release dates.

I haven't seen all of the films you listed (let alone all Oscar winners), so i cannot say more than that I agree with some, and not with others.
But I haven't seen enough yet to try such a list myself.

If you insist though, I could start compiling this.

Im glad you started this thread because I think you have a great idea going here. I have one question for you. Does your list only include your pick for the winner in all four categories or does it also include the nominees as well? Anyhow, if were going to debate any winner on this extensive list I think well need to just go with one year at a time. (For the record, I see some great movies and performances herenot to mention a ton of ones I have never seen.)

Im going to start with Best Picture 1995. Your pick is: Before Sunrise
After doing a little research I want to say that 1995 was a great year. Here is a list of the movies I thought were the best:

12 Monkeys
Nixon
Heat
Casino
Leaving Las Vegas
Strange Days
To Die For
Shallow Grave
The Basketball Diaries
The Usual Suspects
Se7en

Ok. I am leaning toward 12 Monkeys, Heat, The Usual Suspects and Se7en. If you put a gun to my head and made me pickI would give the Oscar to12 Monkeys. This was fun. Ill be back to pick another year/category.

Well this is just the winners, each year I've included nominees as well. My original writing on 1995 has evaporated, but my runners up would be Toy Story first and foremost. My nominees are films that I would be comfortable giving the award to. I haven't seen it for years, but at the time I was very much impressed with Mel Gibson's Braveheart. Likewise Leaving Las Vegas, Casino, Dead Man Walking, and Se7en are all highlights from the year. Embarrassingly enough I still haven't seen Heat, which is even more ironic because I wanted to see it when it was still in theaters 12 years ago.

Since Bamboomedia already wrote a fine example, I'll try to pick 1995 also. A great year indeed, although it is very easy for me to choose the winner:

Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch)

Other nominees would include:
Heat
Se7en
Twelve Monkeys
Leaving Las Vegas

I only listed US films.

Re: My Alternate Oscars

Well 1995 was the rare year when a foreign language film actually was nominated for best picture (Il Postino), and my logic was that if a film could be nominated for a best picture, then it could technically win.

Now I would have possibly listed Dead Man, at least as a nominee, but based on how many US critics had it on their 1996 lists, I was unsure whether or not it would have qualified for 1995 Oscar consideration, not like Jim Jarmusch is going to EVER be nominated for an Oscar. Anyways after seeing Alibi, and being enormously impressed with it, I'm off to Facets to get as many other best picture nominees as I can.

I still haven't quite figured out your process. Are you choosing from all films that were nominated by the academy, or are you simply saying what is the best of a given year in your opinion? If so, there are an awful lot of american choices...

Well one of the problems with foreign films is that finding out the exact year they came out for Oscar contention is hard. My process is best of the year imo, as opposed to the best of what was nominated. Still American dominant aside, I'd say I'm still a lot more partial to foreign film than the Academy has been.
