"The one I am talking about is Vers Nancy, Denis' contribution to the Ten Minutes Older: The Cello project, which I liked a lot."

I did, too. That Denis short will serve you well if you ever get the opportunity to watch L'Intrus, which is loosely based on Jean-Luc Nancy's memoir of the same name.

Besides the short I have only seen two features by Denis. One is listed, the other one, Chocolat (198 , though very good, didn't make my list. But I need to see more by every female director. I'm ashamed to admit that I am not able to come up with a worthy Top 100 list with films directed by women.

Don't know what should be wrong with The Piano. I watched it several times as a teen, and found it very fascinating. But as with Stephen Daldry's The Hours (2002), I think half of its quality has to do with the phenomenal score by Michael Nyman - whixh isn't used to its full advantage i have to say.
I didn't see it as pretentious or aestheticised, but found it rather honest and touching. And I don't think Campion wanted to shock (though there is this one scene - which i love by the way. When Anna Paquin is running to her stepfather to tell of the affair... I could watch this sequence over and over). And I'm a sucker for Anna Paquin and Harvey Keitel, with a weak spot for Sam Neill (ever since I saw him in Zulawski's Possession (1981)).

Might have to do with the fact that I watched 5 films one after the other that day (The Piano was the last screening at 9.30 p.m.), was stuck in traffic and had to jog 3 kms to reach the venue in time for the screening. Further, a friend and I managed to get tickets for The Piano after hustling some petty goons (it was a sold out show anticipating pornographic content) who kept stalking us for weeks. The film did not live up to so much effort and bother Besides, that year the festival had a Bergman and an Antonioni retro, and that particular day had begun with Persona, which I was watching for the first time. Had I been wise, I wouldn't have watched anything else that day. Maybe a rewatch of The Piano would help

Optimum conditions do play a huge role in how we view films. Many films were the result of the 8th or even 9th films watched in a day (The Apu Trilogy was part of 10 films I watched in one sitting).

I've noticed you seem to be getting through films at a hell of a rate- i've been slowing right down and more selective. Older + greyer.

I live 5 blocks from the best video store in the US, so that helps.

8,9 or 10 films in a day. Haven't done that yet. My maximum was 6 in a festival.
What other films did you see that day madhuban?
And yes, give The Piano another chance sometime.

Unless it is a festival, I try not to see more than 3 films a day. I'll die of cinephilia if I attempted to watch 10

@A

5 for that day in 1994 in this order

Persona - Bergman
Identification of a Woman - Antonioni
The Silent Touch - Zanussi
The Age of Innocence - Scorsese
The Piano - Campion

I guess I was still thinking of Scorsese's film halfway into The Piano. That I had a crush on Daniel Day Lewis didn't help matters either Will definitely see Campion's film again.

I also don't believe that I would be able to sit through ten feature, but I haven't tried it yet, so who knows.

I haven't seen the other four films on your list, so if they are all masterpieces, it might be a normal reaction to ignore The Piano after that.

I'm just kidding, though The Age of Innocence is the Scorsese film I would like to see most (besides revisiting The King of Comedy (1982) - and I haven't seen anything by Krzysztof Zanussi yet. There are too many talented polish filmmakers. Or maybe I should say there were...

The Antonioni and Zanussi films were average. It was Persona first thing in the morning that did it!
